Have you ever met someone who wasn’t that large of a person but they were extremely strong for their size? That’s what core training is all about. In any sport you do if you can find the secrets in using more muscles at once then you opponent, you can be stronger and faster then them, even if they are physically larger and look stronger then you. On top of this you can learn to use more force while exerting as little energy as possible. For instance if I’m playing basketball and go up to get a rebound I want to make sure to secure the ball with both hands and bring the ball in to my midsection securing the ball with my core. If my opponent only grabs the ball with one arm, I’m going to be able to rip the ball out of their grip because I’m able to use my entire body to secure the ball where as my opponent is only using their one arm. Even if my opponent is a hundred pounds of pure muscle heavier then me, my body weight will greatly out weigh their one arm. Thus my body weight if used properly can be much stronger then my opponents one arm even if they are twice my size.

In what sport do you just use one muscle group? The only sport where you would do this would be professional bodybuilding. In every other sport you use multiple muscle groups at a time. If you play basketball and you are getting a rebound, you use you legs to help jump, your arms and shoulders to reach up and grab the ball, your back and stomach to help balance you as you go up and come down from the jump, and even your neck, finger, and smaller muscle groups as well. The point is you are using your entire body together. When people work out in the weight room they usually focus on muscle isolation. They are trying to build up just their biceps, or just their glutes. In our programs we have a lot of balancing drills that help build and enhance core strength. If you start loosing your balance you must use your opposing muscle groups to balance yourself out. This means that you aren’t just training the primary and secondary muscle groups, but also the opposing primary and opposing secondary muscle groups as well. You might even be training muscle groups that you didn’t even know existed with some of these drills. Core training helps teach people how to master their bodies and helps greatly build athleticism.
